Get Moving!

A new project run by Active Derbyshire and High Peak Borough Council will help make our community stronger and healthier, contributing to our shared ‘New Mills 2030’ vision.

This aims to try and bring more movement into the day to day lives of the residents of New Mills. They’re interested in supporting more traditional sports and physical activity offers, but especially determined to support people who are currently fairly inactive to make changes to their lifestyle. They want to widen the number of New Mills residents who embrace being outdoors. This could be either by incorporating more activity into day to day activities, such as using feet or bikes for travel, or becoming involved with a community initiative such as a community garden or a befriending offer of walking together.

They recognise a strong link between community strength and the level of physical activity in a town, and note the great potential for some cross-over or connectivity between some of the work that is already happening or being planned. They’d like to assist this but also see if there is some way we could help existing projects thrive. They’re also conscious that significant portions of the New Mills population participate a lot less than others. They want to understand this better and use your insight and experience to discover and enable activities and communication that will address this imbalance.

So if you have a project that increases people’s movement and activity, especially ones that address inequality in participation in physical activity, we and they would love to hear from you!

I’m delighted to be able to tell you that Transition New Mills has been given a £500 Greenwatch Action Grant from Derbyshire County Council for the Tackling Invaders project to help us step up our efforts to deal with Himalayan Balsam this year.

This will enable us to:

  • purchase protective equipment such as gauntlets
  • publicise the project better
  • run more events for the public by providing insurance cover

This is great news and a testament to the support of those who made the project a success last year. I hope we will be able to involve many more people this year and raise awareness to a wider audience.

If you can help out with organising the project, or if you have contacts in local groups who may be interested in participating (eg. landowners, scout groups, conservation groups, anglers, or anyone else) then we would love to hear from you.
The latest Project Plan can be seen here: Tackling Invaders Project Plan 2015. It’s likely that the first events will be held from June. If you’d like to be kept in touch more closely we have a separate email contact list for the Tackling Invaders project; let us know at transition.newmills@gmail.com if you would like to be added to it.

Free Money!

Well sort of.

As you know, we’re soon holding an event to look at more ambitious projects for Transition New Mills where money is no object.

Coincidentally, we’ve also heard of an ongoing scheme whereby £10 donations to a local group can be matched by £10 of money from the Cabinet Office for Civil Society.

There’s a slight catch in that it costs £72 to register. So, it’s only worth it if we can recoup more than we spend. Before we embark on registering on the scheme and canvassing for donations (from you!), we’d like to see how many of you would be prepared to donate £10 to Transition New Mills. Depending on how many people ‘pledge’ to donate, we’ll consider joining the scheme.

You may ask what we’d spend this money on. Some examples are room hire (£50 for the Widening Horizons event), teas and coffees for participants, this website (£25 a year), printing posters for public events, and so on.

The match-funding offer is open until 31st January 2015 so please let us know your intentions soon!

For other groups who may be interested, Local Giving has a fundraising pack here:  http://bit.ly/GYT2014pack
