New Mills Community Orchard
The Community Orchard is run by the Friends of New Mills Community Orchard, on behalf of New Mills Town Council who own the land. The main NMCO site is adjacent to High Lea Park, but there are also smaller sites at Ollersett and Birch Vale.
Forest Garden Project
New Mills Community Orchard need your help to create a small ‘forest garden’ at the High Lea site.
This is a small area of low-maintenance, edible ground cover plants, shrubs and trees planted together, just like a forest ecosystem. It’s a different way of growing food, working in harmony with nature.
We hope it will catch on with others, who can then apply the same techniques to their own gardens and yards.
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP:
1) Come along on Sunday 5th March 2017 12:30-16:30 to prepare the plot and plant up.
This will involve:
- Putting up the fence
- Laying the cardboard / manure / membrane
- Laying the access path
- Planting up
2) Donate plants and materials
To keep the costs down we could really do with:
- Chicken wire (1m x 15m)
- Large sheets of cardboard (enough to cover 15m2)
- Well-rotted manure
- Seed-free hay
- 15m2 weed-suppressing membrane
- 1.5m+ tall treated wooden fence posts
- Loan of a post basher
- 2 rhubarb plants
- Plant labels
Please let NMCO know if you can donate any of these by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com before the end of February.
